What is Transactional Analysis?

Transactional Analysis (TA) is a theory of psychology introduced by Dr. Eric Berne in the 1950s. Thanks to its practical value in resolving emotional and behavioural problems, it was embraced by the psychology community and gradually expanded into counselling, psychoanalysis, group therapy, management, sociology, organisational development, and education. The ambiguity, complexity, and long treatment times of older psychotherapy methods meant that TA — with its clear core concepts and simple vocabulary — quickly became a popular alternative. Wherever people live and relate to one another, TA has found practical application as a tool for change and problem-solving. It is an applied scientific school that deliberately avoids complicated jargon: its ideas are presented in a way that anyone can observe and experience directly.

In TA, the environment and social relationships matter greatly — yet ultimately each person is responsible for their own life and behaviour, and accepting that responsibility is central. TA pays special attention both to a person's inner conflicts and to the relationships between people. Its core belief is that when people replace destructive, negative, and demeaning patterns with healthy, warm, and honest relationships, they reduce psychological pressure on themselves and others and enjoy life more.

Despite its simplicity, TA can bring order to complex, confused, and troubled thoughts and feelings. By separating and organising thoughts and emotions, a person gains better self-knowledge, becomes more aware of their strengths and weaknesses, and can choose healthy, constructive behaviours. TA also makes it possible to map the structure of personality as diagrams — so that anyone familiar with the method can read a diagram and understand the personality structure and interpersonal transactions it records.

Foundations of the theory

  • The Parent, Adult and Child ego states — an interconnected system of thinking, feeling and behaving
  • Analysis of transactions: how people relate, based on simultaneous psychological and social responses
  • Psychological games: hidden, two-level exchanges between people, and predicting their outcomes
  • Life-script analysis: the overall plan that shapes each person's way of living

Applications

  • Building behavioural, emotional and cognitive self-awareness — three key aspects of personality
  • Counselling, psychoanalysis and group therapy
  • Human-resource management and organisational structures
  • Social sciences and education
  • Behaviour change through rational insight, emotional understanding, and a contract for change

Training courses

Our courses, workshops and seminars are taught by lecturers and members of the International Transactional Analysis Association.

The Transactional Analysis Institute (T.A.) works to advance knowledge, raise personal and social awareness, and build scientific communication across all levels of society using the theory of Transactional Analysis (TA).

The Institute's activities include: consulting, research, planning, and expert services; information retrieval and dissemination for studies and the preparation of scientific, cultural, and social articles in humanities fields related to TA — carried out by lecturers, researchers, and specialists; research projects for various organisations; congresses, conferences, seminars, workshops, classes, and courses on TA; introducing academics, researchers, and enthusiasts to TA in Iran; and building relationships with international associations related to the Institute's work.

This website was created to share scientific information about Transactional Analysis and to offer related books. The site is owned by the Transactional Analysis Institute. Mr. Mansour Bahrami Moayed (Chairman of the Board) and Mr. Farid Bahrami Moayed (Managing Director) are responsible for the accuracy of its information and the protection of its audience's and customers' rights.
